Under the Stars Movie Series

5.20.22

This summer don’t miss our free movie series, presented outside the Historic Dunbar Theatre. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy the films — and some special guests as well.

June 4 @ 8 pm: Many Fires This Time: We the 100 Million. This poetic docudrama depicts the struggles of the one in three Americans living today in economic insecurity. Be sure and stick around for the special Q&A session with the filmmakers.

June 11 @ 7 pm: Imitation of Life. Before this film begins, there will be a panel discussion moderated by special guests from The Kansas African American Museum. The 1959 Douglas Sirk feature film — centered on the struggle for identity of a young Black woman who “passes” for white in the 1950s — was nominated for two Academy Awards and is now preserved in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry.

June 18 @ 8 pm: BlacKKKlansman. Spike Lee’s pulse-pounding drama tells the real-life story of Colorado Springs Detective Ron Stallworth, a Black police officer who in the 1970s infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan. After the film there will be a very special Q&A with its writer, KU professor (and Oscar winner!) Kevin Willmott.

June 19 @ 3 pm: Space Jam Street Party! Come out for an afternoon of family fun with music by Pioneer Legend Dj.Don Thompson, food trucks and free popcorn — with a screening of Space Jam at 4:00 pm.

Power CDC would like to thank our friends at TKAAM, Tallgrass Film Association and Wichita Community Foundation for their help in bringing this film series to you!
